fashion week is upon us

f i n a l l y .

 

I am so excited for tonight as it is the start of My Cape Town Fashion Week experience so I put together SO MANY OUTFITS but in the end chose this one, because it suddenly got chilly and the whole pencil skirt and wedges wasn't going to work out if I had to walk for six hours.

a certain fashion house, and more than likely, the AFI seems to have an issue with letting everyone know exact times of what's going to happen . . . so I was all dressed up, ready to go to be at the venue at 1pm, and I get a message from my editor saying that it has all gone haywire and been shifted to 7 . hello

I was sick of sitting at home, waiting for better things to come along, and avoiding my college work as usual - I took my sister, Jess, to the Noordehoek Common to go make friends with the horses - but they were far away, and belong to other people .

 

More on the fashion Week later, and more than likely more pictures of the same outfit, so don't get sick of it okaaaay :)

runway show just in

which was last week, where put up on facebook yesterday and I was so excited . . .

until I saw my picture . . .

here are the problems, right.

1) those aren't my shoes - mine were platform grated sling backs, with blue ribbons and safety pins.

2) I have hand made fabric, studded ankle straps that cover the foot in chains?

3)the chaining on the front is COMPLETELY wrong!

my best aspect of this is - I left a fully diagrammed sheet of instructions on the front of the bag.

Can someone be so stupid? Or not care THAT much?

completely ruined everything about my OUTFIT and ruined my night, though I only noticed the chaining on the front on the stage. BUT NOW I'M FURIOUS!

so upset.

the only good thing about this is I know who the dresser that screwed up is :)

McTribute comes to an end

2 outfits, 4 garments in total

Accessories to go with it.

3 weeks from start to finish.

That’s 15 days open to do the work at college.

That’s 97 and a half hours.

I finished on Thursday, with 45 minutes to spare.

Today was the end. We had to present our garments, including shoes and accessories to a panel of judges who decided whether or not the garment would showcase in the Graduation Collection Runway show in November.

Which is all well and fine . . .

Until you throw in the fact that there are 38 of us in our year, each with 2 outfits

And only 32 spaces open.

After much organisation and frustration with Matric Exams so incontinently placed, Melanie Burghart, one of the my many add on family members, agreed to be pricked and prodded as my model. Lovely Traditional Pom look about her, all pale and stuff :) She had her first South African Metrorail experience, and a nice little walk around My end of Cape Town. Was a warm, Spring day, luckily :) We arrived at college a little bit early, giving me just enough time to realise how stressed I was at that moment. The class was pretty full already so kind of just wondered around for a bit and then started with the make-up. Decided on painting on eye lashed with black liquid eye liner on the lids, with just a flicker of glitter, my personal touch ;)

Mel wearing my Corset and Jeans. The corset has distressed floral cut outs, adjustable, presstudded clasps and  a safety pin to keep it all in. The ribbon strap is attached by safety pins.

Roughed up and grated, the black stilettos, ankle straps, presstudded on and ribbon bows at shoes sling-back strap. I loved my shoes :)

 This is my 28 panel dress, with fitted Cropped jacket. It has the distressed floral cut outs along the raw edged hem. The chain is loosely roped around jeans buttons, although that was not the original plan, I think it came out kinda well.

 The chain on at the waist is draped over buttons. The roped shoulder details took hours, they are hand sewn loops of rope, then prick stitched onto the actual jacket yoke.

Much to my surprise, my dress and cropped jacket combo got into the Showcase :) Over joyed to be honest.

Long story short everything went really well, and I was so impressed with most of the outfits I saw. Really creatively presented. Some of the models looked as though the designer had designed the clothes specifically for them. I mean, Liz Stone even got the skin tone correct :)

Liz Stone with her amazing shoulders! Mosaic stilettos. Beautiful. I really enjoyed these outfits. Both of these garments got into the show.

Kate Stanton with her mens wear model. Made the cut :)

Christie Sutherland made a jumpsuit and a dress with hot pants. I really really loved her designs, simple and clean cut. The bow hair accessories were so fitting too. Very sweet C :)

Raya Rossi with her girls. Hand painted writing and spray painted lace. Fold over waistband flyless jeans. Cropped cuffed pants. Straw hats. Leather shoulder point. The dress made it into the show line up. It was all lovely, so perfectly Rayaesque. 

So far I have only found out a few of the garments that are in, but congratulations to everyone of my fedisa people) :) It was a really interesting 3 weeks

McQProject - Week One

Hectic week.  Am sooo behind from where I wanted to be, although, only 4 hours behind my 'new deadline'. Hopefully will get done by Wednesday, giving me Thursday to fix things and make sure everything is right.

This past week, I finished my dress and 3/4's of my cropped jacket. All that is left is a pair of jeans and a corset, but if I run out of time, I'm just ganna have to make a cropped tank shirt, which should be fine too.

"Tribute to McQueen" Style lab - Day One

Day One of our Style Lab exam type thing. 

Our theme this year is 

T R I B U T E   T O   M c Q U E E N

A tribute to the man,to the country (the United Kingdom), to the art, to the design, to the love.

Although he is known for his outrageous designs and such,  he didn't seem to do much denim in his career? So how can we be doing a "tributary" for him if he didn't use the fabric what we have been assigned to use? Maybe that's the whole point of the assignment? To think along the same lines,while still being ourselves as designers? But we can draw huge amounts of inspiration from the Man :) And when in doubt, there is always google :)

Union Jacket :) Awesome hip/side-seam detail. Just good quality avant guarde vibes :) 

 Something a little more commercial, but I like the shoulders and the re-fabrication used :)

Basically, it's a denim exam, that ends with the best garments going on our runway at the end of the year fedisa Showcase runway show. Sounds easy hey? Until you hear that there are about 40 students,each doing two full outfits - that's, what about 80ish sets? Yeah, there are only 28 spaces for women's wear and 4 for men's. AND worst of all, we only have two and a half weeks from briefing to hand in. That's storyboards, all art aspects etc, patterns, re-fabrication, sewing and finishing the outfit with accessories, shoes, jewelry and make-up. So all in all, it's a rough competition.

How incredible are these shoes?! The Lobster Shoe, also called the Hoof Boot, only released after McQueen's death in February of this year. I am sooo obsessed with these shoes, but I cannot simply copy them for my outfit so I have to work a way to copy without copying :(  

They can be seem on Lady Gaga in her music video of Bad Romance.

Everybody in class is being really secretive about there ideas, as there is only so much you can do with denim in such a short space of time. But so far, I think I have a fairly good idea of what I'm ganna do :) I have been drawing in my croque book all day and have come up with some fair alright designs, just nothing is jumping out at me yet.

Let's keep on keeping on, I guess :) Back to the Big Black Book :)
